This PPI compact pilots for a Robusta coffee based jurisdiction (coffee accounts for 94.3% of agri land), sourced by a number coffee buyers (such as ACOM, LDC...) and faced with issues of soil degradation, water overuse and bad farming practices to implement Green Growth targets. The Mbangassina municipality is located in the Mbam and Kim Division of Central Cameroon region. The municipality covers about 815km&sup2; and comprises 19 villages, with a population of about 68,000 inhabitants.
In 2020, the municipality embarked on a journey to support community livelihoods, increase the sustainability of cocoa production and other agricultural products, while ensuring forests are protected and restored &ndash; through the <a href="https://www.idhsustainabletrade.com/landscapes/grand-mbam-and-djoum-mintom-cameroon/">Green Commodity Landscape Program</a>. This program is based on a landscape approach in which industry partners (from cocoa and other sectors), public partners, financiers, CSOs and knowledge partners work together through the development of land-use plans that protect forests, address the needs of local communities, and help make cocoa farming a sustainable livelihood option.

Mbangassina is a predominantly agricultural community with cocoa production being their principal occupation accounting for more than 70% of household incomes. 
Other crops are subsidiary and mainly subsistence, with some food sales making an important contribution to maintaining household supplies of food and income between cocoa marketing seasons. The food crops (cassava, plantain, cocoyam, yams, maize, pumpkin and fruit trees/vegetables etc.) and the large cocoa farms developed into agroforests provide this population with the essential means of subsistence and a significant part of their annual monetary income (30% to 80% on average).&nbsp; 
Cocoa is one of the main cash crops, production averages 5810 tonnes per year with an estimated 9700 cocoa farming households, the cultivation of plantain is another major source of income to farmers, about 2500 tonnes produced annually. Other crops considered as cash crops within the municipality include cassava, with over 72500 bags of flour sold per year and 2500 tonnes of cassava roots produced per year. Yams equally serve as a major revenue crop to households, with production averaging 2000 tonnes per year. 
In addition, we can note that the flora of Mbangassina is rich in non-wood forest products such as mushrooms, lianas, gnetum, djansang, cola nuts, plants medicinal, wild mangoes, rattan, bamboo, and wild fruits that are source of revenue to many households (Nieboukaho et al., 2016)

The municipality is located at the frontier of two key ecosystems, a forest ecosystem and a savannah ecosystem, making the region more vulnerable to climate change, which is accelerated by land-use change. It is characterised by degraded forest land largely converted to cocoa agroforestry and extensive savannah land principally used for food crop cultivation and cocoa expansion. While Mbangassina has no community forests on its own, community forests from the neighbouring municipalities of Ngoro and Ntui stretch into Mbangassina covering 2,000 ha.
Deforestation in the municipality is driven by agricultural commodities, small holder food crops cultivation, fuelwood and timber harvesting coupled with urbanisation.

The municipality of Mbangassina is made up of about 68,208 inhabitants unequally distributed amongst the different villages, with Voundou as the most populated village with over 12,100 inhabitants. Migration into the municipality has been very high, with over 39.6% increase in population over a 10-year period (2005-2015).
According to a household survey carried out in 2020 (ICRAF, 2020), agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the population of this municipality, it accounts for 80% of food consumption and 70% of household income. Cocoa is the main source of livelihood with 96% of the sampled population indicating that cocoa is one of their main sources of income, 79% depend on food crops, 23% on tree crops (Fruit trees, NTFPs), 11% from small businesses, 5 % generate revenue from livestock and 4% from pension.

The Ngoro municipality, located about 160 km north of Yaound&eacute; in the Mbam and Kim Division of Cameroon&rsquo;s Centre Region, covers 1,576 km&sup2; and is made up of 24 villages with an estimated population of 20,829 inhabitants (PCD, 2022). Ngoro records one of the highest population growth rates in the Division, which increases pressure on natural resources. The landscape is largely covered by forests, interspersed with woody and grassy savannahs, and hosts important rivers such as the Pem, Djim, and Mbam (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023).
&nbsp;
1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Background and Context
Ngoro has long been recognized as a major cocoa production basin within the Grand Mbam Landscape, which makes it a priority entry point for the Green Commodity Landscape Program (GCLP). This program, led by IDH, aims to reconcile sustainable production, forest protection, and community inclusion. Agriculture, particularly cocoa, constitutes the main source of income for more than 90% of households, alongside cassava, banana/plantain, taro, maize, and yam (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023).

2. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Economic Characteristics
<ul style="margin-top: 0cm;" type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 6.0pt; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; text-align: justify; line-height: 115%; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;">Cocoa is the principal cash crop, cultivated on farms ranging from 1&ndash;3 hectares, with production often located in forest areas (92%) and to a lesser extent in woody savannahs (8%) ( Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023).</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 6.0pt; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; text-align: justify; line-height: 115%; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;">Food crops (cassava, plantain, maize, yams) play a critical role in household food security and income diversification. Cassava alone is produced at around 120 tonnes annually, processed into flour, fufu, and other derivatives sold locally and in Bafia, Yaound&eacute;, and Bafoussam (MINADER, 2022).</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 6.0pt; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; text-align: justify; line-height: 115%; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;">Livestock rearing (cattle, pigs, goats, poultry, and increasingly beekeeping) complements farming activities but also contributes to agro-pastoral conflicts in some areas (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023).</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 6.0pt; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; text-align: justify; line-height: 115%; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;">Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) such as djansang (Ricinodendron heudoletti), bitter kola (Garcinia cola), wild mango (Irvingia gabonensis), medicinal plants, are important to household economies, especially for women (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023).</li>
</ul>
Despite these opportunities, most households earn modest incomes: the majority range between 25,000 and 50,000 CFA/month (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023). Poor road infrastructure, limited access to finance, and weak farmer organization reduce the profitability of agriculture.
&nbsp;
3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Environmental Profile
Ngoro lies at the transition between forest and savannah ecosystems, making it vulnerable to climate change and land degradation. Between 2000 and 2021, forest loss was estimated at more than 7,300 ha (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023). The direct drivers of deforestation include slash-and-burn agriculture, expansion of cocoa farms, bushfires, and artisanal logging. Indirect drivers are population growth, migration linked to economic crisis, and poor infrastructure (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023).
The landscape also harbors threatened species such as pangolins, gorillas, elephants, buffalo, and hippopotamus, alongside valuable timber species (Moabi, Sapelli, Ebony, Iroko) (IUCN, 2021; PCD, 2022).

4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Social Profile
Ngoro is multi-ethnic, with Sanaga and Djanti communities as the main autochthones, alongside migrants (&asymp;16% of the population). Vulnerable groups include the elderly and victims of violence, with women playing a central role in agriculture and household welfare (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023). Women are involved in cocoa farms (often as labourers alongside men), cassava production, and small trade, though their access to credit and decision-making remains limited (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023). Children also contribute labour in cocoa fields, mainly after school (28%) and during weekends (48%) (Ngoro Baseline Study, 2023).

5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Key Sustainability Challenges

With its strong agricultural base and active community, Ngoro offers opportunities to scale up sustainable cocoa and diversify into cassava, plantain, and market gardening. The Coalition is working to strengthen cooperatives, and pilot locally restoration. 
By aligning with the Green Commodity Landscape Program, the Ngoro Coalition provides a model of integrated landscape governance that balances production, protection, and inclusion ensuring the sustainability of both livelihoods and ecosystems.
