Forest Positive Coalition

The Cavally region is one of the main forested areas of Côte d'Ivoire. With an estimated population of 708,241 people in 11,376 km2, it is also a major producer of cocoa and rubber. However, the region is plagued by deforestation and lost about 80% of its forest cover between 1960 and 2018, mainly due to agricultural activities. Deforestation affects not only forests in the rural domain, but also protected areas such as the Taï National Park and classified forests such as the Cavally, Goin Débé or Scio classified forests.
To respond to this challenge, the Cavally Regional Council led the development of two documents that support the sustainable development of the region: a Regional Land Use and Development Plan (SRADT) and a Green Growth Plan, which were developed through a participatory process that brought together a coalition of public and private sector actors, technical and financial partners and civil society – a process supported by the IDH.
In March 2022, 27 public and private organizations and civil society representatives signed a Memorandum of Understanding (a Production, Protection, and Inclusion Pact), through which they pledged to work together for&nbsp;inclusive and environmentally sound growth in the region <a href="https://www.idhsustainabletrade.com/landscapes/cavally-cote-divoire/">Cavally</a>&nbsp;.
Through this agreement, the signatories committed to support the implementation of the green growth plan, in the following pillars:
<ul>
<li>Protection, restoration and sustainable management of the Taï National Park;</li>
<li>Inclusion of the population in the protection and restoration of forests, with a focus on youth and women;</li>
<li>Promotion of firewood and timber through new tree plantations;</li>
<li>Improved productivity of cash crops (cocoa, coffee, rubber, etc.) and food products (rice, corn, cassava, yams, etc.);</li>
<li>Facilitating access to finance through VSLAs;</li>
<li>Support for the acquisition of land certificates.</li>
</ul>

Cavally Region

The Juruena Valley (Juruena and Cotriguaçú municipalities), located in the Northwest of Mato Grosso state, has great conservation relevance for being an ecotone, a transition area between two biomes, Cerrado (Savannah) and Amazon. This biome transition condition has many peculiarities but the fundamental one is to be a hotspot with a rich variety of endemic species.&nbsp;These neighboring municipalities are located on the margins of Juruena river, around 930 km north of Cuiaba, Mato Grosso state capital.&nbsp; 
 
The region is considered the new agricultural frontier since its colonization occurred recently – around 30 years ago – and consequently the deforestation culture is still strong and present within local community. Juruena Municipality has a total area of 319.000ha, of which 191.400ha are preserved with native vegetation and the other 127.600ha are mainly used for livestock activities. The municipality of Cotriguaçu has a total area of 912.358ha, of which 711.000ha is still preserved with its native vegetation (being 168.938ha an indigenous land) and the other 200.640ha are used for livestock activities. Juruena Valley is considered one of the breeding cradles of Mato Grosso, being responsible for the production of 35% of calves in the state. 
 
IDH, together with Natcap and local stakeholders, have conducted a process designed to build a sustainable development vision for the Juruena Valley region, comprising the municipalities of Juruena and Cotriguaçu. This process, which took place in the second half of 2017, had as its main stages the engagement of local stakeholders, the agreement on intentions regarding the priorities for the region, the set-up of goals, and the consolidation of the common vision for the municipality through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on&nbsp; May of 2018. The PCI Regional Compact in the Juruena Valley aims to develop a d-free sourcing area for local products, through public and private partnership, enabling conditions to promote sustainable intensification, while reducing deforestation and generating income.

Mount Kumbira Reserve

The Program started in 2021 and is developed by SEBRAE-MT with our co-financing and the partnership of Casterleite and Sicredi dairy in the Vale do Juruena region, Mato Grosso Amazon. The objective is to promote the improvement of dairy farming, through the transfer of knowledge and implementation of technologies, increasing milk production and the profitability of the small producer, based on environmental sustainability. The Program focuses on professionalization, the best use of all available resources and the vision of sustainable entrepreneurship, even for those who are in the field. The work includes technical assistance visits, training on management and entrepreneurship and regular monitoring of participating producers.

Development of the Dairy Supply Chain Program (Nosso Leite)

The Program began in 2018 and its vision is to change the production and marketing dynamics of the livestock chain in Brazil, improving the results of the breeding segment in economic, environmental and social aspects. The partnership has investments from IDH, Grupo Carrefour and Carrefour Foundation, and aims to reach 557 producers in Mato Grosso, located in the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal biomes. The Program aims:
<ul>
<li>support for calf producers so that farms become profitable and investable. This includes the development of plans for production intensification and traceability, as well as support for environmental regularization (CAR), and development of PRADA plans (Project for the Recovery of Degraded or Altered Areas), which are fundamental steps towards compliance with the Brazilian Forest Code.</li>
<li>Enable an innovative approach to deal with the issue of indirect cattle suppliers, with the definition of criteria for the creation of a responsible production territory in order to deliver results for the entire beef production chain, reaching national and international markets;</li>
<li>Increase the income of small calf producers, through training, technical assistance and access to credit, enabling not only productive and conservation results, but mainly social benefits for the entire region.</li>
</ul>
As a result, the program aims to increase areas of sustainable sourcing, innovate solutions to the complex challenges of the regions, ensure full compliance and secure connections with the global market and new business.

Solutions that the Program brings:
<ul>
<li>General diagnosis of the property, within the criteria of good agricultural production practices;</li>
<li>Guidance for land and environmental regularization;</li>
<li>Support for access to fundraising for investments in technology and environmental recovery;</li>
<li>Technical assistance in the areas of animal production and property management;</li>
<li>Technical assistance for the recovery of Permanent Preservation Areas (APP).</li>

Sustainable Production of Calves

Ecookim Coop-Ca (from here on: Ecookim) is a union of cooperatives that purchases, processes and exports cocoa beans in Côte d’Ivoire. Ecookim is experiencing continued growth and currently counts with&nbsp;30&nbsp;member cooperatives&nbsp;and approx. 30,000 producers covering an area of close to 97,000 hectares of cocoa, and&nbsp;1,472 producers of cashew nuts across 9,390 hectares. The aim of the project is supporting this agroforestry transition in the scope of a larger investment into Ecookim, which would include an investment in the agroforestry transition, increase in cocoa processing and bio cashew operations.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Agroforestry Transition with Incentives

​​​​​​​The Project Proposal includes a detailed description of the Project. In brief, the Project can be described as follows: 

The Taï National Park (TNP) and the classified forest of Cavally are the main forest relics of the Cavally region. They are under increasing pressure from surrounding communities, who are looking for additional land to cover their immediate needs: food production (leading to extensive farming), energy (with woods) and income generation (e.g. through cocoa and coffee production).

The proposed project aims at containing and reducing the pressure on the Taï National Park and Cavally classified forest in the eastern part of the Cavally region while improving the incomes of the region's populations, in line with the PPI approach.

This project is part of the implementation of the green growth plan of the Cavally region and contributes to the three pillars of the PPI Compact. To this end, it was prepared and will be implemented by six signatories of the Cavally platform.

The project specific objectives are:

<ul>
	<li>Protect the source of the Hanna River draining the TNP and contribute to the protection of 40,000 ha of the Cavally Classified Forest. </li>
	<li>Improve the agricultural practices of coffee farmers and the income of farmers riparian communities.</li>
</ul>

These objectives line up with the PPI-approach, which will serve as the framework for the implementation of this project.
